The Watney Mann Invitation Cup (the Watney Cup to supporters) was a pre-season tournament held in the early 1970s contested by the two highest scoring teams in the four divisions of the Football League the previous season that had not been promoted or involved in European competition. Sponsored by the Watney Mann brewery, it was the first tournament in England to sell its naming rights.
The six participants were Sheffield United, Derby County, Hull City, Peterborough, Aldershot, Reading and Manchester United. The fixtures for the first round, semi-finals and final were drawn in advance so Derby knew before the competition began that they would have home advantage in the semi-final and final if they progressed.
Derby County: Green; Webster, Robson; Durban, McFarland, Mackay; McGovern, Carlin, O'Hare, Hector, Hinton.
Manchester United: Stepney; Edwards, Dunne; Crerand, Ure, Sadler; Morgan (Stiles, 57), Law (Fitzpatrick, 25), Charlton, Kidd, Best.
