Forest: Sutton, Laws, Pearce, Walker, Chettle, Hodge, Crosby, Parker, Clough, Jemson, Carr
Oldham: Rhodes, Barlow, Barrett, Irwin, Adams, Warhurst, Henry, Holden, Milligan, Bunn (Palmer), Ritchie
Oldham started the game brightly but Franz Carr forced the first save of the game, his header being tipped round the post by Andy Rhodes. Steve Sutton was also called into action, acrobatically tipping an Andy Ritchie shot over the crossbar as the defences were on top in the first half. Rhodes once again denied Forest on the half-hour, diving low to his left to stop a good shot from Garry Parker, before Carr showed some neat footwork to flash an effort just wide on the stroke of half-time. Two minutes into the second half and Forest took the lead through Nigel Jemson. A long kick forward was flicked on to Nigel Clough who showed great close control to play in Jemson one-on-one. His initial shot was saved but he was on hand to finish off the rebound to put The Reds ahead. Steve Sutton produced an absolutely sublime save to deny substitute Roger Palmer, clawing away his header to push it around the post on 70 minutes. The one goal was enough for Forest as they secured consecutive League Cup trophies, making it four League Cup wins for Brian Clough.
