River Plate lost the 2011 Clausura's Super Clasico by a score of 2-0, and it was about as big of a gut punch as a loss can possibly be. They lost to their biggest rivals, they were the better team on the night, they took themselves out of the title race, and they put themselves back into the relegation race. Does that sound like the worst loss ever or what? Both goals were scored in the first half, both came off set pieces, and both were incredibly lucky. The first was an own goal, deflected in off the leg of Juan Carrizo, and the second was a looping header by Martin Palermo. River defender Jonathan Maidana was substituted off for an injury in the 22nd minute, and Boca immediately took advantage of his absence.River weren't nearly as good in the second half as they were the first, as it appeared that Boca's goals seriously sucked some life out of them, but they were still the better side. Regardless, the goal never came, and River have to endure both the stomach punch that is losing to Boca and a slide towards the relegation playoffs.
