Albion were strong favourites but their manager had done them few favours by being filmed at Wembley with the FA Cup on the morning of the game for the BBC’s Football Focus. Atkinson’s team selection left a lot to the imagination too. The new boss, only at the club for three months, kept faith with the side who had seen off Derby and then high-flying Nottingham Forest in the quarter-finals which meant Laurie Cunningham was on the bench and Bryan Robson in the stands.Just eight minutes into the game, Mick Mills crossed from the left and Brian Talbot headed the opener and also connected with Wile’s head. Twelve minutes later Mick Lambert’s corner wasn’t cleared and Mills finished from close range. Albion got back into it 13 minutes from time when Allan Hunter’s handball in challenging Cyrille Regis to a high Mick Martin cross was spotted by Clive Thomas allowing Tony Brown to score from the penalty spot. But Martin was sent off and Ipswich scored a third in the final minute when an unmarked John Wark nodded in Clive Woods’ corner.
