After 103 years, Southampton said farewell to its tightly-knitted and often intimidating ground for opponents, The Dell. They were ready to move into the new modernised St Mary’s Stadium for the 2001-2002 season. Survival was as ever the aim going into the campaign and this time, there were no worries for Saints supporters. They matched their best-ever finish in the Premier League of 10th and fittingly, the final-ever goal at The Dell was scored by their messiah, Matt Le Tissier. There was a sour note though when manager Glenn Hoddle walked out on the club in March to fill the vacancy at his boyhood club, Tottenham Hotspur.
