P.L. 2010 2011 Arsenal Manchester United

Sunday 1 May 2011,
Day 35
Emirates Stadium,

Referee: C. Foy
Attendance: 60107

It could have been a championship mach of epic proportions, but instead today’s Arsenal v Manchester United 2011 Premier League match has been toned down significantly with Arsenal failing to capetalize on a number of opportunities over the past several weeks to stay close to the Red Devils. Still, Arsene Wenger and his men will want to end the season on a positive note, proving to the rest of the league that they’re on the same level as Man Utd. Arsenal vs Manchester United also presents the Guners with the opportunity to spoil Ferguson’s plans at a league title, something that at this stage of the season Arsenal will be delighted to play a part in.

Arsenal stand in 3rd place with 64 points. They’re in poor form recently, having won 2 and lost 1 of their past 8 games. Playing at Emirates, the Gunners have collected 30 points in 17 matches, including 2 wins in their last 5 played. Despite a return to fitness, Belgian defender Vermaelen will not take part in the game, with Djourou continuing to fill at that position. Diaby will also miss out on the clash of giants but Rosicky could make a return in today’s Arsenal v Man Utd match. Wenger has been under heavy criticism after failing for 6 years running to capture any silverware, so the consolation prize will have to come with a win over United today.

Manchester United travel to London with a recent form where they have let in 7 goals and dropped 8 points in their past 5 matches away from Old Trafford. Alex Ferguson’s side are underdogs against Arsenal today, but the focus will be on adding to to their 73 point total and strengthening their 1st place position in the league. United have one foot in the final at Wembley for the Champions League final, but they will first want to take care of things on the homefront. Chelsea are 6 points behind but with a United loss today, they could have their fate in their own hands as a match against Man U awaits. Paul Scholes is still missing through suspension, Fletcher is doubtful, Berbatov is likely to come off the bench, while Rio Ferdinand is likely to be given a rest after a tough series of matches.
