Veltins Arena Gelsenkirchen
A second half strike from legendary striker Raul saw Schalke seal a well deserved 1-1 draw at the Estadio Mestalla and place themselves firmly in the box seat ahead of the second leg at the Veltins arena.
The Miners last reached the Quarter-Finals of Europe’s premier club competition in 2007-08 after a Neuer-inspired performance between the sticks saw them edge past FC Porto in the last 16 on penalties. Elimination at the hands of Barcelona followed, but fast forward three years and history beckons again as Felix Magath’s men seek to turn over Spain’s number 3 side. Coming into the match however, things have been tricky and another defeat, this time at the hands of struggling VfB Stuttgart at the weekend would have worried coach Magath ahead of Wednesday’s clash.Still, Schalke have been a force at home this season in Europe at least, but the games sense of unpredictability equally emanates from visitors Valencia’s superb record on the road this season. Bursaspor, Manchester United, Rangers and Atletico Madrid amongst others have all failed to get the better of Los Che this season, and Unai Emery’s men will look to their smash-and-grab 1-0 victory in the corresponding fixture in 2007 as evidence that they are more than capable of recording another win on the road. Weary Schalke striker Raul has already sounded the warning bells for his teammates ahead of Wednesday night’s clash. “I think that Valencia will be more dangerous than in the first leg,” he told the official Schalke website. “Valencia have many great players who can also play massively in away matches. And despite our small advantage, there are still 90 minutes in which Valencia can turn the tables,” he added. It all points to an intriguing prospect as two fairly equal sides seek to battle their way into the last eight.
