Ligue des Champions 1996 1997 Borussia Dortmund Juventus Turin

Finale
Olympic Stadium
28 Mai 1997

Juventus, the finest club side in Europe, were clear favourites. The Final, held in Juventus' centenary year, was to be a showcase for the awesome talents of Del Piero, Boksic and Zidane, and Borussia were simply a sideshow. What actually happened was one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament. Sweeper and club inspiration Matthias Sammer was back for Borussia, and the German team contained no less than four ex-Juve players - Kohler, Moller, Paulo Sousa and Reuter. They needed to be at their best as the game began, as Juventus started in ominous form. With Di Livio and jugovic pressing from midfield, and Boksic and Vieri threatening and stretching Borussia, the Germans were forced back into defence for the first 25 minutes.
In the 29th minute, however, Borussia forced a corner. Moller swung the ball in from the left, and it was half cleared by the Italian defence. It reached Paul Lambert who chipped it back into the box, where the waiting Karlheinz Riedle chested it down and fired it into the net with his left foot. Within five minutes, unfancied Borussia were two up. Moller again from the left corner spot found Riedle who outjumped the defenders to head it in at the near post.
Juventus had nothing to lose and surged forward, Zidane hitting the post with a low shot and Vieri scoring but using his hand, adjudged referee Puhl. At half time, Marcello Lippi threw caution to one side and replaced
centre-back Sergei Porrini with Del Piero. Again, Juventus took the fight to Borussia, their pace and mobility posing all sorts of problems for Sammer's men. In the 56th minute, a deflected shot from Boksic beat keeper Stefan Klos, but bounced off the crossbar. Eight minutes later, however, Juventus made their breakthrough. Boksic left Kohler stranded on the wing and his near post cross was expertly flicked in the net past Klos by Del Piero.

Lars Ricken came on to replace Chapuisat in the 70th minute and within seconds of his arrival Borussia had scored a third. Moller passed to Ricken, accelerating in space through the centre, and Ricken, spotting Peruzzi off his line, sent a magnificent lob from 35 yards over the out-of-position keeper. Amoruso immediately replaced Vieri but Borussia held firm. At the final whistle, the Dortmund players threw themselves on top of each other on the pitch, while the Juventus team simply appeared stunned.
The trophy was back in German hands for the first time in fourteen years. Juventus had thrown all they had at the determined, intelligent and organised German side, but Borussia had tactically out-thought Juventus, taken their chances and deserved their victory. As coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said, 'I must thank all my players. They were magnificent'.
