With the 1974 competition having been abandoned because 1974 European Champion Clubs' Cup winners FC Bayern München and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners 1. FC Magdeburg could find no convenient dates to battle for the trophy, the UEFA Super Cup was revived a year later following Bayern's second successive European Cup win.
Bayern came into the two-legged tie against 1975 Cup Winners' Cup winners FC Dynamo Kyiv as heavy favourites, but inspired by 1975 Golden Ball winner Oleh Blokhin, the Ukraine side pulled off a surprise.
The star player in Valeriy Lobanovskiy's brilliant side, Blokhin won the first leg for Dynamo in Bayern's Olympiastadion on 9 September when he sprinted through from midfield, leaving Bayern's all-star defence standing, to score the only goal of the game after 66 minutes.
Blokhin underlined why he was made Soviet player of the year for the third year in succession in the second leg in Kyiv on 6 October. Well over 100,000 fans saw him beat Sepp Maier in the Bayern goal after 40 minutes, and then again after 53 minutes, to take the Super Cup for Dynamo with a 3-0 aggregate win.
It was to be the pinnacle of the achievement of that great Dynamo squad, who under Lobanovskiy moulded the style of accurate passing play which still holds sway at the stadium that now bears the venerable former coach's name.
Blokhin, meanwhile, became the toast of Europe for a time. Incredibly, he was still playing for Dynamo when they won the Cup Winners' Cup again in 1986.
