doubt, Chelsea were regarded as London's most glamorous football club
in the bigining of the 1965-66 season, on the verge of realising that
potential foreseen by Gus Mears and Frederick Parker in those long ago
Edwardian days. Disappointingly, the team was never seriously in
contention for the League championship, Liverpool maintaining a
formidable lead from Christmas onwards, and a final sixth place was
considered less than satisfactory. To prevent fixture congestion Chelsea
made the decision not to defend their Football League Cup in view of
qualification for European competition.

Avec le faux-pas de Man United face à Newcastle samedi (1-1), Man City avait une occasion idéale de s’envoler en tête du championnat. Mais globalement décevants, les Citizens ne sont allés chercher qu’un nul à Liverpool et auraient pu s’incliner sans les belles parades de leur gardien, Hart. Déçu par la performance de son équipe à Naples en Ligue des Champions, Mancini avait fait tourner pour ce match (5 joueurs changés) et nul doute que ses habituels remplaçants retrouveront prochainement le banc de touche.
