Barcelona vs. Dynamo Kiev: match which is counted as one of the most exciting European fight backs that the Camp Nou has been witness to.

NOTE: In the 1993-94 season, the format of the Champions League was different from what it is now. The tournament started with three home and away knockout rounds. Winners from the knockout rounds were then pooled in two groups, each containing four clubs. All the clubs in a group played each other on a home and away basis. The top two teams from each group then proceeded to a two-legged semi final; the winners of which played a one-off final.

The following chronicles the second leg of Barca’s first knockout round against Dynamo Kiev of Ukraine.

Главный тренер "Барселоны" Йохан Кройф обещал дать для киевских спортивных журналистов утром в день матча пресс-конференцию. Но она не состоялась, так что общение киевских журналистов с прославленным тренером ограничилось его пятиминутным выступлением в аэропорту "Борисполь". Впрочем, никаких пикантных подробностей глава "Барселоны" не сообщил, будем, мол, завтра, играть и, сами понимаете, постараемся выиграть у молодой и амбициозной киевской команды. Ознакомившись с составом обоих клубов, искушенный болельщик, несомненно, заметит, что в "Динамо" вопреки ожиданиям вышел едва оправившийся от травмы самый острый и результативный форвард команды Виктор Леоненко. А вот в составе "Барселоны" не появился недавно приобретённый бразилец Ромарио, приглашенный в сборную для участия в отборочном матче ЧМ-94. Но и без него с первых же минут испанцы всей командой уверенно пошли в наступление, и уже на 2-й минуте их левый крайний Иван подал угловой у ворот "Динамо". Обошлось. Киевляне не остались в долгу и сами предприняли несколько попыток контратаковать, но пройти дальше центра поля им не удавалось. Но вот настала 6-я минута. Почти с центра поля последовал пас на правый фланг одиноко маячившему Леоненко, он догнал мяч почти у углового флажка и незамедлительно переправил его в центр штрафной площади. А там Шкапенко в прыжке головой пробил точно в дальний угол. Испанцев такой оборот дела, конечно, не устраивал. Они предприняли длительный штурм динамовских ворот. Одна атака следовала за другой. Особенно опасным стало положение на 19-й минуте, когда по воротам "Динамо" били раз за разом чуть ли не все форварды и полузащитники "Барселоны", но столь желанного ответного гола добиться им не удалось. Динамовцы, сгрудившись в своей штрафной, стояли несокрушимой стеной, закрывая путь мячу. Но в очередной сутолоке у ворот Мизин сыграл рукой, и судья назначил пенальти, уверенно реализованный Рональдом Куманом. Однако перед концом первого тайма в одной из редких атак "Динамо" испанцы в своей штрафной сбили с ног Шкапенко, и штатный пенальтист клуба Леоненко уверенно реализовал 11-метровый. 2:1! Нетрудно представить, о чём беседовал Кройф со своими подопечными в раздевалке. Во всяком случае, после возобновления игры испанцы всерьёз и надолго обосновались у штрафной киевлян. Но "Барселона" чрезмерно увлеклась атакой, чем "Динамо" не замедлило воспользоваться: на 56-й минуте последовала резкая контратака, и в сутолоке у ворот Леоненко отправил третий мяч в ворота "Барсы". Это уже была более чем серьёзная заявка на победу в этом очень важном для "Динамо" матче. Правда нам показалось, что третий гол в ворота "Барселоны" забил Топчиев, но на табло появилась фамилия Леоненко, а потому, передавая технический протокол, мы не стали оригинальничать. За десять минут до финального свистка Леоненко, который играл "на уколах", заменил Шаран. Испанцы же не пали духом. Они изо всех сил стремились переломить ход борьбы в свою пользу, без устали атакуя ворота "Динамо". Но судейский секундомер бесстрастно и безжалостно вёл счёт оставшимся минутам. И вот наконец раздался столь желанный финальный свисток английского рефери - 3:1. Динамовцы Киева одержали красивую победу над очень сильными соперниками. Через две недели их ждёт ответный матч в Испании. И неплохие шансы на общую победу.

 Le Real Madrid s'est imposé sur le terrain de Getafe (0-1) lors de la 22e journée de Liga grâce à un but de Sergio Ramos (18e). Leaders au classement, les Madrilènes prennent provisoirement dix points d'avance sur le FC Barcelone, qui reçoit la Real Sociedad (22h00). Titulaire, Karim Benzema a beaucoup pesé sur le front de l'attaque madrilène mais a pêché dans la finition, avant de céder sa place à Gonzalo Higuain (72e). Lassana Diarra était lui aussi dans le onze de départ. Aligné aux côtés de Xabi Alonso dans l'entrejeu, le Français a disputé l'intégralité de la rencontre.

 No era fácil que el Madrid perdiera en Lleida. En el Camp d’Esports sólo había perdido el Valladolid. La última salida de los blancos(El Sardinero) daba mala espina. Sus dos primeros remates acabaron en gol, tras golpear el balón en las botas  de dos jugadores montañeses. Pero la Unió Esportiva no perdió la fe, cosa que sí parece haber hecho consigo mismo el equipo de Floro.  Este Madrid ha tocado fondo, K .O. en la Copa,‘groggy ’en la Liga y contado, sobre la lona, en la Recopa. A base de corazón, el Lleida se alzó con un triunfo que resultaba  increíble y acabó siendo indiscutible.
 Txema puso orden atrás, Matosas fue el gigante de la zona ancha y Andersen el estilete que hizo explotar de alegría a todo un pueblo y enrojece de ira y vergüenza deportiva al madridismo, que ve y no cree.  El triunfo del Lleida fue inenarrable, pero lo narraron televisiones, radios y periódicos. El triunfo del Lleida viene a demostrar al equipo catalán algo que sabíamos desde que se inició la Liga: que no está, ni de lejos, entre los dos peores de la categoría. Que el Madrid esté o no entre los mejores es harina de otro costal. Pero tampoco lo parece. Son dos puntos de ascenso los de ayer para un Lleida que lucha contra todo y contra todos.  La ‘media’ de Mané, empata si no puedes ganar, tiene dos excepciones-cañón: el triunfo en el Camp Nou y el de ayer. Con esos dos resultados  no parece justo, ni necesario, que el Lleida descienda a Segunda División.

 Au moment de la finale, que le titre de champion de France paraissait acquis à l'équipe de Bourgogne,mais, comme l'avouera plus tard Guy Roux, il ne manque vraiment pas grand-chose à Nîmes pour se hisser au niveau de la division 1. Et l'entame de cette finale confirme toute l'estime portée par le technicien bourguignon à cette formation de national 1. Les Nîmois en veulent beaucoup plus. Ils se jettent comme des affamés sur chaque ballon, devinant peut-être que la distance finira par faire l'affaire de leurs adversaires, plus aguerris, plus expérimentés, plus solides aussi.

 Dans la vie de Johan Cruyff, Paris tient une place importante. Ce n'est pas du tout, de notre part, affirmation gratuite puisée à la source d'un nationalisme exacerbé. Paris fut d'abord pour Cruyff l'occasion de confirmer un talent qui n'avait été jusque-là que révélé par la télévision — et rarement — au public français. C'était au printemps 1969, Benfica et Ajax s'étaient réciproquement battus sur leur propre terrain par 3 buts à 1 et l'U.E.F.A. avait décidé de faire jouer le match d'appui à Colombes. C'est la dernière fois que le vieux stade de Colombes, si lointain, si vétusté mais si cher au cœur des vieux sportifs parisiens, fit le plein parfait. Même les virages d'où la visibilité n'est pas bonne étaient remplis à ras bords de supporters portugais et hollandais. « Ah! le match d'appui contre Benfica, jamais je ne l'oublierai, se rappelle Johan. Savez-vous que je garde précieusement chez moi le numéro de présentation du journal l'Équipe qui avait publié une page entière en hollandais et une page en portugais. 

 Ce fut une aventure merveilleuse et exaltante, d'autant plus que nous gagnâmes le match par 3 buts à 1 avant d'aller en finale un peu plus tard. »

Paris, c'est aussi pour Johan le siège d'affaires qui marchent bien. Le champion hollandais a donné son nom à des articles fabriqués par le « Coq Sportif » et il vient régulièrement en France assurer la promotion des produits. Et puis, Paris... c'est Paris. « J'aime tout de Paris, dit Johan. L'ambiance, les magasins, les distractions. Et ma femme partage ce goût. » Paris, qui rêve de retrouver une grande équipe, a peut-être perdu une occasion unique d'engager Cruyff. C'est le genre d'erreur dont on ne retrouve jamais la clé.

  Trois jours après avoir éliminé Manchester City en demi-finale de la Coupe de la Ligue, Liverpool, ultra-réaliste, a sorti Manchester United (2-1) au 4e tour de la Coupe d'Angleterre. Entré en jeu, le Néerlandais Dirk Kuyt a offert la victoire aux Reds à la 88e minute du match. A défaut de briller en Premier League et d'être en mesure de remporter un dix-neuvième titre de champion, Liverpool mène grand train en coupes. Mercredi, les Reds ont sorti Manchester City en demi-finale retour de la Carling Cup (2-2). Samedi, ils se sont offert United au quatrième tour de la Coupe d'Angleterre au terme d'une rencontre qu'ils n'ont pas dominée. Leur mérite aura cependant été de mieux la terminer que les hommes de Sir Alex Ferguson. Possesseurs du ballon le plus clair du temps, les Red Devils n'en ont pas fait grand-chose. Dirk Kuyt a fini par les punir.

Entré en jeu à l'heure de jeu à la place de Jamie Carragher, le Néerlandais a trouvé la faille après une remise d'Andy Carroll et une double approximation de Patrice Evra et de David de Gea (2-1, 88e). Titularisé en lieu et place d'Anders Lindegaard, le portier espagnol n'a pas rassuré. Une fois de plus. Alors que MU n'est plus en course qu'en Premier League et en Europa League, on peut se faire du souci pour le temps de jeu du jeune gardien mancunien. Sur le premier but non plus, l'ancien de l'Atletico n'a pas brillé par son autorité. Au contraire de Daniel Agger, qui s'est imposé dans les airs (1-0, 21e). Mené au score, Manchester United a su répondre par l'intermédiaire de Park, bien servi par Rafael (1-1, 39e). Dominateurs, les Red Devils ont semblé sans inspiration sur la pelouse d'Anfield, où Patrice Evra a dû avoir les oreilles qui sifflent. Durant 90 minutes, l'international français a été hué par le public suite à l'affaire des insultes racistes de Luis Suarez et la suspension de ce dernier pour huit matches. Présent dans les tribunes, l'Uruguayen a dû apprécier l'épilogue. Sa suspension touchant à sa fin, il disputera les 8e de finale de la Coupe d'Angleterre. Pas Manchester.

  Taken at statistical face value, this appeared to be a pretty  ordinary  year. A semi-final line-up  of Manchester United, Arsenal,  Tottenham and Newcastle was a victory for the Cup's old guard. Of the two non-league teams that made it to the third round, Yeovil's presence was virtually taken as read, and Southport's defeat to Leyton Orient failed to hold many back pages. This being the FA Cup, drama was never far below the surface, and the top teams hogged almost all of it for diemselves. It was an uncharacteristically quiet Third Round, with Coventry providing the fireworks by scoring seven against Macclesfield. New kid on the block, Darren Huckerby, was too quick, and scored a hat-trick. The first hint of what was to come arrived with the fourth round draw. Manchester United v Liverpool dwarfed the other fifteen ties. With just a minute to go. United trailed to a goal from Michael Owen, but a late, late show from DwightYorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent OldTrafford into a frenzy. It would be a fourth consecutive trophy-free year for the Merseysiders. The other big boys made steady progress. Tottenham put Wimbledon away in a replay - for the Dons life amongst the elite was coming to an end; the third tier and Milton Keynes awaited them. Spurs drew a tough one at Leeds in the fifth round. Tim Sherwood's goal forced a replay and Darren Anderton, in a rare spell away from the treatment room, and David Ginola ended the Yorkshire club's interest. Newcastle had been drawn at home in every round — although they only beat Blackburn in a replay at Ewood Park. They were particularly impressive in a 4-1 home win against Everton in the quarter-final; two goals from the excitable Georgian international Temuri Ketsbaia set them on their way.

Arsenal, after victories at Preston and Wolves, faced what looked a straightforward task against Sheffield United at Highbury. With quarter of an hour remaining, the Blades were standing toe to toe with the champions at 1-1. When Lee Morris fell injured, United keeper Alan Kelly kicked the ball into touch for him to receive treatment. Ray Parlour attempted to restart the game in the now customary manner by throwing the ball back to his opponents. Most players had moved towards the Arsenal half, but not Marc Overmars.The Gunners' winger stole the ball, dashed down the wing and squared for the now incoming Kanu to slot home. The match took minutes to restart, while the understandable storm of protest was brought under control. The referee was powerless to disallow the goal, as Arsenal had broken an unwritten code rather than an official rule. Overmars excused himself by claiming not to have known Kelly's kick into touch was deliberate. Curiously, he was in a minority of one. Arsene Wenger's offer to replay the game was sporting, fair and accepted. The sight of Overmars, never likely to be a candidate for Players' Player of the Year at any club, opening the scoring stuck in everyone's throat, but Arsenal repeated their 2-1 victory and the episode finished with almost everyone's honour intact. Kanu managed a less controversial effort in the next round, which was enough to see off Derby and take Arsenal into the last four. Manchester United's quarter-final was a less straightforward affair. They hosted Chelsea who, despite playing a man short for fifty minutes after Di Matteo was sent off, held out for a goalless draw. Scholes evened up the numbers late on with a red card, but the game was niggly rather than full-blooded. Having made life difficult for themselves, United's assured, professional display at Stamford Bridge saw them run out 2-0 winners with both goals coming from Dwight Yorke.

The semi-final draw matched Arsenal and Man United, so Newcastle faced Spurs at Old Trafford with both sensing an opportunity.The tie pitted the wits ofTottenham's David Ginola against his former club, and much was expected of die Frenchman after goals in each of die diree previous rounds. At Old Trafford Alan Shearer proved that flair is no substitute for reliability, striking twice in extra time to send Newcastle into their thirteenth final. The first match between the top two finished scoreless, but was no tepid affair. The Gunners' Nelson Vivas had been sent off after elbowing Nicky Butt. Roy Keane was left cursing his luck after a marginal offside decision had denied him a winner. His misfortune was football's gain as it ensured a scintillating replay. The teams returned to Villa Park only three days later, as United had an appointment in Europe the week after. After a high-octane start, a trademark David Beckham swirler from twenty yards gave Seaman no chance. The goal seemed to redouble both team's efforts, and the game flowed from end to end but without a clear chance worthy of the name. With just over twenty minutes remaining, Arsenal drew level in fortunate circumstances. Dennis Bergkamp's effort was taken away from Peter Schmeichel by a deflection off Dutch international team-mate Jaap Stam. The game had turned in an instant and for the rest of normal time the momentum was with the Gunners. Nicolas Anelka appeared to have put Arsenal in front but his strike was chalked off. On seventy-four minutes Roy Keane was dismissed for a second bookable offence, and the heart looked to have been ripped out of United. In injury time, Ray Parlour's surge into the box was checked by Phil Neville's lunge, and Arsenal had won a penalty.

In retrospect, to choose a Dutchman for such an important spot-kick may have been Arsenal's undoing. Holland's international record in shoot-outs is as woeful as England's. Bergkamp's penalty was by no means appalling, but it lacked pace, height and direction! Schmeichel guessed right and his massive frame easily diverted the ball round his left-hand post. A game that looked to have been moving inexorably into Arsenal's grasp suddenly lurched back towards United. With the game on a knife edge, it looked increasingly likely to be settled either by a mistake or a moment of individual brilliance. On 109 minutes, the moment duly arrived. Vieira's tired pass was horribly misplaced and rolled into the path of Ryan Giggs. Although just in his own half, Giggs' momentum carried him thirty yards before any Arsenal player could react.

Ask any Premiership defender in the last dozen years what confrontation he feared more than any odier, and most would instantly recall the sight of Ryan Giggs bearing down on them at full tilt. Even so, the Welsh winger on this occasion was faced with one of the most settled and parsimonious defences in the country. He weaved through them as if they were a pub team, leaving Tony Adams a prostrate spectator as he fired past Seaman into the roof of die net. If one moment defined the FA Cup in the nineties, this was it. It won United the tie and powered them to a record fifteenth final. Unfortunately for Alan Shearer, United carried on where Arsenal had left off the previous year. Not even the loss of Roy Keane through injury inside ten minutes could turn the match Newcastle's way. Within two minutes of the Irishman's departure, his replacement, Teddy Sheringham put United one-up, and they sealed a comfortable victory eight minutes into the second half. Nikos Dabizas fluffed a clearance and Sheringham's pass set up Paul Scholes to fire past Steve Harper. United's tenth Cup had been won at a canter.
