A 3-1 win over Wellington Phoenix has seen Melbourne City level the record for most Ninja A-League championships after lifting their fifth Championship Trophy at AAMI Park. A late first-half double from Holly McNamara and an early second-half goal from Leticia McKenna put Wellington away before Makala Woods got them on the scoreboard. Melbourne City had nothing to show for their early dominance, the score staying at 0-0 after half an hour. McNamara opened the scoring with a deceptive, looping shot from the left edge of the area in the 41st minute. Just two minutes later, McNamara had a double. The Matilda being thread through on goal before sliding it past the diving Victoria Esson. McKenna got the second half off to a cracking start, pinging a left-footed long shot in off the far post to extend City’s lead to 3-0. Wellington pulled one back in the 52nd minute, Woods in the right place at the right time to tap home a rebound. The final half hour saw a flurry of Wellington chances as the Phoenix tried desperately to claw back a result, but City prevailed to secure their first championship since 2020. McNamara’s two goals earned her the player of the match trophy.
