Two days out from Christmas, the Ninja A-League turned its attention to the Melbourne Derby, with City’s wish list featuring underlined at the very top: a third win of the season. Their local rivals Melbourne Victory were standing in their way, two wins in a row sitting them at the top of the ladder, a point ahead of Canberra United. With minor chances from both sides in the opening stages, it was Melbourne City’s Leah Davidson who had the crowd in full voice in the 23rd minute, unleashing a scorching 30-yard strike that had Victory custodian Courtney Newbon at full stretch to glove it away. Leticia McKenna was next in line to put Newbon through her paces, firing off her own long-range attempt just before the half-hour mark, but it was City’s continued inaccuracy that would cost them, moments later. Victory gathered their own momentum at the other end of the pitch, with Rhianna Pollicina reminding them of just how clinical she can be in front of goal, burying the first goal of the match past Malena Mieres at the near post.

With Victory up a goal at the break, the second half began similar to the first; both sides trading patches of possession, but failing to move the scoreboard. In the 65th minute however, Victory watched their lead disappear in an instant, as City’s Aideen Keane crossed from within a blade of grass of the byline and found the wayward boot of Victory’s Claudia Bunge, who watched helplessly as it rolled over the line for an own goal. Chances for both sides went begging and with time running down, it took a set-piece play engineered by Leticia McKenna, finding Holly McNamara on the run in the box, who blasted a left-footed shot deep into the back of the net, completing the comeback in a stirring win for the Sky Blues.
