There were three early kick-offs in the Championship to ring in the new year, with managerless Plymouth Argyle coming from behind twice to earn a much-needed point at home to Bristol City.  Elsewhere, Michael Fry netted the first goal of 2025 for Queens Park Rangers as they secured a 3-1 victory over Watford. Portsmouth also romped to a 4-0 victory over Swansea City climbing above the relegation zone in the process. At the top of the table, Leeds United were hoping to extend their lead and almost won it after Pascal Struijk struck from the penalty spot. However, West Bromwich Albion grabbed a 90th-minute equaliser to secure a hard-fought point. In the first of the evening kick-offs, Middlesbrough grabbed a stoppage-time winner to condemn Hull City to the drop zone, before Sunderland moved above Sheffield United in the race for promotion after beating them 2-1.

In League One, Birmingham fell off the summit after they only managed a 1-1 draw against promotion rivals Stockport County. That allowed Wycombe Wanderers to capitalise and regain top spot with a 2-1 win over Exeter City. Bristol Rovers’ Chris Martin scored his first league goals of the season despite defeat at home to Leyton Orient, in what was his 600th appearance in the top four tiers of English football. Wrexham lost 2-1 against Barnsley at Oakwell with Adam Phillips' thunderous effort ensuring three points for the South Yorkshire side. Reading also secured a 3-1 victory over Cambridge United with Harvey Knibbs scoring a brace against his former club. In League Two Walsall extended their lead at the top of the table with a 1-2 win over Notts County in League Two. At the other end, Morecambe put their 2024 woes behind them and climbed off the bottom with a 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers. The most dramatic game of the day came at the Mornflake Stadium where Crewe Alexandra came from behind to beat Carlisle 3-2 courtesy of two stoppage-time goals.
