The Brazilians are celebrating another crown after defeating Amakhosi 5-1 in Premier Soccer League action on Thursday evening. Mamelodi Sundowns Clinches their Seventh Successive Title. Both teams sought to find their groove early into the encounter, with no decisive opportunities emerging. However, the match took a dramatic turn 19 minutes in when Chiefs were reduced to 10 men due to defender Given Msimango receiving a straight red card for fouling Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who was advancing towards goal. Sundowns began to assert dominance with goal-scoring opportunities, however Bruce Bvuma remained resolute in goal, denying the Brazilians any breakthrough. At halftime, the score remained deadlocked at 0-0.
Rhulani Mokwena's team emerged with vigour early in the second half, aiming to penetrate Chiefs' defence. Their persistence paid off when Tashreeq Matthews broke the deadlock after 52 minutes. Just four minutes later, the task became even tougher for Chiefs as Matias Esquivel’s shot deflected off Zitha Kwinika to extend the Brazilians' lead. Matthews wasn't finished for the evening, securing his brace in the 81st minute and adding Sundowns' third goal.
However, shortly thereafter, at the opposite end of the field, Mduduzi Shabalala was fouled in the penalty area, prompting the referee to immediately signal for a penalty. Shabalala confidently stepped up to convert, scoring a consolation goal for the Glamour Boys. However, Ribeiro and Thembinkosi Lorch put the nail in the coffin scoring in the latter stages of the match to hand Sundowns a 5-1 victory. This officially marked Sundowns’ seven league title with six league matches still to play, while Chiefs are placed in the eighth spot on the PSL standings.
