Australia’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign has kicked off in style, with a 76,000-strong crowd flooding to Stadium Australia to witness a 1-0 win over Republic of Ireland. The Matildas’ World Cup opener was decided off the left foot of vice-captain Steph Catley, who donned the armband on Thursday night in the shock absence of Sam Kerr. The Matildas leader and global superstar was ruled out with the submission of the matchday lineups, with a calf injury set to sideline her until at least the third and final game of the group stage. Catley scored a 52nd-minute spot kick – a penalty Kerr would have taken if on the park – to create history in green and gold, in what were emotional and truly special scenes at Stadium Australia – reminiscent of those produced by John Aloisi with the Socceroos in 2005 at the very same end of the same ground.
