New Zealand’s winless, goalless run was extended in Auckland as Argentina completed back-to-back wins over the Football Ferns. Mariana Laroquette scored the only goal of a fiercely contested friendly at North Harbour Stadium as La Albiceleste emerged from a morale-boosting spell Down Under with a third successive win. The FIFA Women’s World Cup™ co-hosts did at least produce their best performance of a concerning spell of matches, showing plenty of energy and commitment while still coming up short in their search for a goal. Veteran striker Hannah Wilkinson was the chief culprit in that respect, blasting wastefully wide in 22 minutes when a pass looked to be the better option, then attempting to square for a team-mate soon after when she should perhaps have gone for goal. ilkinson then spurned New Zealand’s best chance in the dying seconds of the first half when, following some outstanding approach play by stand-in skipper Bety Hassett and an inch-perfect cross from Gabi Rennie, she volleyed wide from all of seven yards. That profligacy was punished 13 minutes from time when Laroquette sprung the offside trap, skipped around Erin Nayler and fired in a shot that hit the back of the covering Claudia Bunge before bouncing agonisingly into the net.
