AC Milan came to Australia as four-time European Champions and thirteen-time winners of the Scudetto (Serie A champions). By the end of the 1993-94 season, they would again be Italian and European Champions. As much as Australians would like to lay some claims to helping AC Milan climb this mountain, there is little evidence suggesting that their trip to Australia had much to do with it. The history of AC Milan itself is glorious and their trip to Australia coincided with a sweet spot in their storied history, being bookended by two of their greatest ever European triumphs, in 1990 and 1994. The players who arrived in Australia were, even by the loftiest global standards, peerless – Alessandro Costacurta, Mauro Tassotti, Demetrio Albertini, Franco Baresi, Roberto Donadoni, Zvonomir Boban, Jean-Pierre Papin and, at the time, the world’s most expensive player, Gianluigi Lentini. It was a footballing institution of global standing, a team comprising players who would become immortal and coached by one of finest of the modern era, Fabio Capello. The boisterous ovation – of primarily Italian Australians - that greeted the rossoneri on their arrival was testament to their allure.
