With every primetime, main event boxing match, there is an undercard. For months on end, the primary focus is on the main event and its fighters and their preparation. And when fight night finally comes around, fans’ anticipation is stoked by the undercard. But sometimes, the undercard becomes more like a main event. As 1,514 fans watched Monday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Pitt’s campus, two teams fought. They fought for the colors blue and gold, although neither soccer team wore those colors — the No. 7 Pitt men wore white, and No. 6 West Virginia donned gray seemingly out of respect for the sanctity of the fight. And they fought for a backyard a property that contains about 75 miles worth of rolling green hills. And in this fight where neither party can toss in a white towel and call it quits midgame, when the 90 minutes were up, the blue, the gold, the backyard and all that comes with it belonged to Pitt. And at least until Thursday’s football game, it’s theirs to keep after shutting out the Mountaineers, 3-0.
