Chiefs made two alterations from the team that narrowly beat Richards Bay, as Phathutshedzo Nange got his first start of the season alongside a recall for Siyabonga Ngezana. The Citizens, meanwhile, were bolstered by the return of Bafana Bafana international Terrence Mashego while Wayde Lekay got his first start as the hosts went in search of their first victory. City were quick out the blocks as Darwin Gonzalez opened the scoring inside five minutes with a close-range finish at the back post after a well-weighted cross by Thamsanqa Mkhize.
While Amakhosi absorbed the pressure and struggled to get out of their own half, Eric Tinkler's charges created more openings and they almost had a second goal on 25 minutes after Njabulo Ngcobo cleared Lekay's header off the line after goalkeeper Brandon Petersen could not collect a high ball. Chiefs Arthur Zwane was then forced into a change after that as Reeve Frosler picked up an apparent hamstring injury and was replaced by Happy Mashiane. Overall, it was a disappointing opening 45 minutes from the Soweto giants, who were only able to force one save out of City goalkeeper Darren Keet, while Eric Tinkler would have felt his side deserved more goals.
Chiefs had a bright start in the second stanza, as Kgaogelo Sekgota had a cracking strike from outside the box that needed strong hands from Keet. However, Amakhosi's dominance until the hour-mark was undone by a set-piece as Nathan Idumba doubled City's lead with a powerful header from an in-swinger by Khanyisa Mayo. Chiefs looked to break down City who stayed deep, with George Matlou replacing Nange while Nkosingiphile Ngcobo came on for Siyethemba Sithebe. Zwane's men threatened going forward but their final ball in the last third let them down as the Citizens did enough to hold on to their first victory of the season at the sixth attempt.
