Les Orlando Pirates ne participeront pas à la Coupe de la Confédération et à la Ligue des champions de la Confédération africaine de football (CAF) 2023.Ils ont en effet terminé la saison 2022 de DStv Premiership bien loin des places qualificatives. Les Pirates, qui ont perdu 5-4 aux tirs au but en finale contre le RSBerkane ( Maroc ), futur vainqueur de la Coupe de la Confédération, le week-end dernier au Nigeria, ont bouclé la saison en battant Maritzburg United 4-1. Thembinkosi Lorch, Kwame Peprah, Deon Hotto et Kabelo Dlamini ont marqué pour les Pirates, la réponse de Maritzburg étant signée Brandon Theron. Malgré ce résultat, les Pirates terminent à la sixième place avec 43 points du classement du  championnat  de l’Afrique du Sud .Ils  ne pourront donc pas participer à la compétition continentale de l’année prochaine. Les Mamelodi Sundowns, champions de DStv Premiership, et Cape Town City, deuxième,  disputeront eux  les deux compétitions de la CAF l’année prochaine. Pour rappel, les Sundowns ont remporté le titre lundi en battant le Royal AM 3-2, conservant ainsi la couronne  de champion pour la cinquième fois consécutive.

Orlando Pirates recorded their first DStv Premiership win in four matches as they comfortably beat Maritzburg United 4-1 at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday evening. Thembinkosi Lorch was the star of the show with a goal and three assists to help Mandla Ncikazi's side return to winning ways. Kwame Peprah, Deon Hotto and Kabelo Dlamini also got on the scoresheet for the hosts, with Friday Samu getting a solitary reply for the Team of Choice, who finished the season in 12th place. The Sea Robbers moved up to sixth in the standings on 43 points, six away from their target of CAF Champions League football. Should the Buccaneers beat Royal AM and SuperSport United on 27 and 30 May respectively they will finish runners-up in the league. Pirates were looking to snap a three-match winless run in the top flight, while Ernst Middendorp's team went in search of back-to-back victories for the first time since September to finish the campaign on a high.
