Pumas UNAM have earned a shot at their fourth CONCACAF Champions League title after holding on for a 0-0 draw at Cruz Azul on Tuesday to secure a berth in the final. The 2020 Mexican Guardianes runners-up, who were reduced to 10 men after Arturo Ortiz’s 63rd-minute red card, will face the winner of the tie between New York City and Seattle Sounders. Seattle won the first leg at home 3-1, with the second leg to be played on Wednesday, ahead of the continental decider with the first leg scheduled for later this month. Juan Dinneno’s double in the first leg gave Pumas the advantage in both scoreline and complexion, in comparison to what was a cagey first leg.

With Cruz Azul needing to chase the game and tie, space was not a premium on Tuesday and it was largely characterised by end-to-end football, with chances for both teams. Uriel Antuna came closest for the hosts, but they were lacking composure in both the final pass and in front of goal. Cruz Azul were given a small lifeline just past the hour, with Ortiz sent off for dragging down Santiago Gimenez as the last man in the 63rd minute. Pumas were even denied a penalty in the 75th minute and managed to hold on. They will face the winner of the tie between New York City and the Seattle Sounders.

Los Pumas UNAM, que jugaron más de media hora con un jugador de menos en la cancha, empataron este martes sin goles con el Cruz Azul y se clasificaron a la final de la Liga de campeones de la Concacaf. Dirigidos por el argentino Andrés Lillini, los universitarios mostraron coraje en condiciones adversas y secaron la ofensiva rival para eliminar a los celestes después de haber ganado el partido de ida por 2-1 el pasado martes. Los Pumas tuvieron la posesión a favor en la primera mitad, 52-48, pero fueron los Azules los quetuvieron mejores oportunidades de gol, entre ellas una con todo a favor del chileno Iván Morales, quien con error grosero dejo ir el gol que ponía a su equipo en la final.

En la segunda parte, de mucha lucha, los universitarios controlaron ante un Cruz Azul que buscó la portería contraria, pero con pocas ideas. El defensa Arturo Ortiz derribó a Santiago Giménez en una jugada de gol de Cruz Azul y fue expulsado, sin embargo el cuadro celeste fue incapaz de sacar ventaja ante un rival que con más corazón que fútbol aguantó. Los últimos minutos fueron con unos Pumas echado atrás, con seis defensores y la 'Máquina' con ataques alocados como púgil que tiró manotazos con los ojos cerrados. Pumas estuvo cerca de convertir en el 98 cuando el brasileño Rogerio estrelló la pelota en el poste. Pumas disputará la final contra el mejor entre el New York FC y el Seattle Sounders de la MLS, que jugarán este miércoles en casa de los neoyorquinos, perdedores 1-3 del partido de ida. El campeón de la Concacaf jugará el Mundial de clubes.
