Southampton stemmed Liverpool’s goal flow to earn a share of the points at St Mary’s Stadium. After 10 goals in their previous two PL matches, Jurgen Klopp’s team were unable to get past Fraser Forster in the Southampton goal. Forster dived to his left to deny former team-mate Sadio Mane after 28 minutes. Philippe Coutinho had a chance to open the scoring after Roberto Firmino sent him through, but struck wide. Firmino twice went close late on as Liverpool dominated, although Charlie Austin headed wide Southampton’s best chance of the match late on.

Having joined in the September of 2015 for a mere £13 million, Dutchman Virgil van Dijk went into the 2016/17 season hoping to lead the side from the back alongside EURO 2016 winner Jose Fonte. The latter combined perfectly with van Dijk due to the former Celtic man’s pace and ball-playing ability, something which he excels in as one of the best in the league. VVD’s importance to both his club and national squad are emphasised by the fact that he made nearly 40 appearances before his injury in January, meaning he would’ve well exceeded the 50-game mark and would’ve been Southampton’ most-played player this campaign. Having gone into the season with a fresh, six-year contract under his belt, the 25-year-old’s importance to the squad was only increased as he was made team captain following the departure of the aforementioned Fonte.

Across the board, van Dijk has been truly stellar this season, and could’ve arguably been in the PFA Team of the Year had he not suffered the injury at the tail end of January. Van Dijk averaged 46.7 passes per game with an average success rate of 84.2 percent. Excluding both Martin Caceres and Harrison Reed who barely featured, that’s the sixth-best average in the entire squad. What’s more, despite averaging a successful dribble every other game, van Dijk was dispossessed just 0.1 times per game when the average is calculated, only showing his confidence on the ball and his incredible technical ability. But on the defensive end his stats are even better, as in the league alone he he has averaged 1.9 tackles, 2.6 interceptions and 6.8 clearances, whilst conceding less than one foul a game. Add that to his four goals in all competitions and you can see where the £50 million valuation has come from....

The Reds have earmarked Southampton‘s Dutch centre-back as the man to rebuild Jurgen Klopp‘s defence, with a club record fee being paid. While there had been suggestions previously that Manchester City would offer more money to sway van Dijk’s mind, the Reds have seemingly beaten off competition from both they and Chelsea to convince the defender to join. The Guardian report that van Dijk has informed Liverpool he wants to move to them, though no fee has yet been agreed with Saints—but the Reds are expected to pay up to £60 million to ensure they get their man. In addition, van Dijk may receive up to £200,000 a week in wages. He would become not only Liverpool’s record signing, but also their first major addition of the summer transfer window, following on from young striker Dominic Solanke agreeing to join from Chelsea after the expiration of his contract.

Klopp’s hopes of restructuring of the team this summer comes after he led the Reds to UEFA Champions League qualification for 2017/18, and securing van Dijk so early on in the close-season—if it indeed goes through soon—will ensure he’s ready to play a part in the two-legged play-off to reach the group stage. The Dutchman, who will turn 26 years old next week, counts Groningen and Celtic among his former clubs, and has been at Southampton since 2015. Capturing van Dijk, a hugely sought-after signing among Europe’s elite, would send the message that Liverpool’s owners are ready to back Klopp to the hilt as the team pursues success next season and beyond—and fans will hope there are more key additions to follow this summer.
