The first Free State derby of the season comes at a very interesting time, as both teams have had very similar starts to their campaigns. Both teams suffered defeats in the first round of PSL games, which was followed by disappointing losses in the MTN8 quarter-finals. However they also both bounced back with mid-week victories a few days ago, with Celtic beating Polokwane City, and Free State Stars doing the business against Maritzburg United. And the similarities have even extended off the field, as both clubs have also had their coaches dragged in front of the PSL Disciplinary Committee after they both openly criticised referees . Clinton Larsen will be hoping that Joel Mogorosi keeps up his personal form, and adds to the two PSL goals he has already scored this season, and he and fellow midfielder Ruzaigh Gamildien will be key for the Bloemfontein club. But equally important for Siwelele is that their defence begins to gel.

They have conceded eight goals in three competitive games, and Larsen will need his captain Thabo Nthethe to lead by example and marshall the defence. Ea Lla Koto have not been much better defensively, they have conceded seven in their opening three competitive games, and Steve Komphela has already stated that his main focus is on fixing his side's leaky defence, especially at set pieces. He will have been pleased with his team's efforts in keeping a clean sheet during the week, and will hope that against their Free State rivals, things continue in a similar vein. New Bafana International Luyolo Nomandela also returned to the starting line-up in the mid-week game, after starting from the bench in their two previous fixtures, and Stars fans must be hoping that he continues where he left off last season. He and the lively Danny Venter may be their trump cards today. The last five Free State derbies have seen the spoils shared pretty evenly. Both teams have won two games each, while their last fixture, earlier this year, ended in a 2-2 draw.
