Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool was the final match of the 2002-03 Premier League season. The match was a crucial one; the Blues needed a point in order to qualify for the following season's UEFA Champions League, while Liverpool – one place behind Chelsea – would leapfrog the home side were they to win. Sami Hyypiä put Liverpool ahead early on, but Marcel Desailly equalised almost immediately, and a superb run and shot from Jesper Grønkjær put the Blues in control in the 27th minute. It would be the final goal of the game as Chelsea secured a place in Europe's premier club competition.

The match is of broader retrospective importance in Chelsea's history, being the last competitive match before Roman Abramovich bought the club prior to the 2003-04 season. The club faced an uncertain financial future before the Russian's acquisition, and it has been speculated that qualification for the Champions League was a key factor in Abramovich's decision to invest in the west London club. When Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on the final day of the 2002/03 Premier League season it earned them fourth place and passage to the following season's Champions League. Roman Abramovich bought the club that summer and since then the Blues have gone from strength to strength. It has long been said that the Russian billionaire decided to buy a football club after attending Manchester United's thrilling 4-3 win over Real Madrid just weeks earlier and being totally in awe of what he experienced.

If the Champions League was so important to Abramovich's choice to try his hand at football - his managerial hiring and firings over the years have certainly indicated that the competition is what drives him - would he have gone ahead and bought Chelsea if they had lost their 'all or nothing' game with Liverpool? Interestingly, if Liverpool had beaten Chelsea that day, it would have been them who claimed the final qualifying place. If that had been the case would Abramovich have bought the Reds instead? Did a goal from Jesper Gronkjaer - an average player now forgotten by most - change the course of football history forever? Consider this, an alternative timeline in which Liverpool actually won on that momentous day and snatched the fourth and final Champions League place from Chelsea's grasp. If that really had been the case, what would have happened to the Reds and the Blues? And how might things be different today?
