This remains the Clubs biggest win in the top flight and one of the Clubs most famous wins. However, for the younger readers, the billing of the match was not what you would expect these days. Crystal Palace sat rock bottom of Division One, with United just two points ahead of the Glaziers in 20th position! So, while this was not as illustrious a win as it would be considered today, there are still many factors that make it an incredible victory.
For starters, Palace had scored just 16 goals in the 20 games they had played to this point, a measly 0.8 goal per game, and were by far and away the lowest scorers in the league.
Before this match, Palace could boast only one win in the previous 14 matches, a 1-0 win at home against Everton, which happened to be Don Rogers’ goal-scoring debut.
Full back Paddy Mulligan gave Palace a 2-0 lead at the break before Rogers made it three. Alan Whittle then curled in a beauty to make it four before Don Rogers scored his second of the game and inspired the commentary that opened this passage.
