Newcastle Nottingham Forest
St James Park
One of the finest football films of this or any other year is the recently released I Believe In Miracles.
Charting the rise of Nottingham Forest from Second Division mediocrities to First Division champions and European Cup winners, it reminds us of the managerial genius that was Brian Clough. A year before the charismatic Clough arrived to begin his revolution at the City Ground, Forest showed up at St James’ Park as supposed no-hopers for an FA Cup quarter-final clash against top-flight big boys Newcastle United.
In a season when the average attendance was around 32,000, a huge crowd of 52,551 was wedged into Gallowgate, reflecting the importance the cup still had at that time. It was a game which would become one of the most infamous in Newcastle United’s long, tumultuous history. With the home crowd expecting a Saturday afternoon stroll into the semi-final, the atmosphere at kick-off was incredible.
