It had been only six months since Bayern Munich and Liverpool had last clashed, but in that time Bayern had strengthened their line-up and proved to be a far différent proposition from the team that had crumbled to an Alun Evans hat-trick back in March at Anfield. Under thé respected coach Udo Lattek they had been transformed, and Franz Beckenbauer, who would lead them to thé German championship later that season, was enjoying a new rôle as an attacking midfielder. Bayern had learned valuable lessons from their earlier defeat, especially thé need to blot Evans and Heighway, the architects of that Anfield victory, out of the game. Brian Hall, who was also closely shad-owed, spent much of thé match scampering about thé field trying to lose his marker and was thus prevented from playing a constructive rôle. In the end, Hall was replaced by Peter Thompson 20 minutes from time, as Liverpool were outmanoeuvred by a tactically superior West German team. All the familiar names were there: Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breitner, Georg Schwarzenbeck, Gerd Mûller and Uli Hoeness lus Franz Krauthausen and Wolfgang Sùhnholz, added to the squad by Lattek. Before thé kickoff, Bill Shankly had expressed delight at seeing Sepp Maier in goal once more, reminding his audience that thé German international had conceded three goals in the last Anfield encounter between the two teams, and had been partly to blâme for two of them. For once, however, the ebullient Liverpool manager had cause to regret his remarks. Sepp Maier produced an exhibition of world-class goalkeeping. He was unquestionably the man-of-the-match, stopping everything that came his way.

  1. Hello, Grand merci pour ton vos matches. C'est fantastique! Surtout ces vieux matches que j'adore. Il manque le lien de la 2eme mi-temps de ce match. Pourriez-vous le faire figurer? Ca serait formidable! Encore merci.
