The 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League is the 3rd edition of the CONCACAF Champions League under its current format. The tournament began on July 27, 2010 and will run through April 2011. The winner will gain a berth in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup.Twenty-four teams participated in the 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League from the North American, Central American, and Caribbean zones. Nine of the teams came from North America, twelve from Central America, and three from the Caribbean.Teams may be disqualified and replaced if they don't have a stadium for the tournament that CONCACAF deems suitable. If a club fails to meet the standards for its home stadium, this club must find a suitable stadium in its own country. If said club fails to provide the adequate facilities, it will run the risk of being replaced. Central America: 12 Central American clubs can qualify to the Champions League. If one or more clubs is precluded, it will be supplanted by a club from another Central American federation. The reallocation would be based on results from the Champions League 2009–10.Caribbean: If any Caribbean club is precluded, it will supplanted by the "CFU Club Championship 2010" 4th place finisher. For the Central American representatives that qualify via split seasons, in nations that play a playoff to determine a national champion, the winner will gain the nation's top spot, and in nations that don't, total points over both seasons, followed by other tiebreakers, will determine which team gains the nation's top spot. After having analyzed previous results, the CONCACAF Executive Committee approved a reallocation of berths compared to the previous two seasons, giving Panama one automatic place in the Group Stage while making both of El Salvador's qualifiers go through the Preliminary Round...

The second of the two Concacaf Champions League semifinals (this one also known as the regional final of the Mexico division) matches up two teams with loads of recent success in the Primera Division. Monterrey and Cruz Azul have been the two most consistent Mexican clubs in recent seasons, both establishing themselves as permanent fixtures near the top of the standings, with Monterrey claiming two of the last three league titles. Cruz Azul, in spite of this recent success, are still in many ways known more for their failures. La Maquina have repeatedly come up short on the championship stage in the Mexican Primera, finishing as league runners-up in three of the last six seasons, a trend that has duplicated itself in CCL play. The perennial bridesmaids, Cruz Azul have reached the CCL final in each of the last two years. Both times, though, they came away empty-handed; losing out to Atlante in 2009, and falling in dramatic fashion to Pachuca in a last second stoppage-time goal one year ago.
In league play so far this season both teams have been solid, if unspectacular. Monterrey have had a bit of a struggle (at least by their usual high standards), suffering four losses already this year – a number which matches their loss total from the previous two regular seasons combined. During the past month the Rayados have also been forced to weather the loss of star striker Humberto Suazo, who has been out of commission recovering from a shoulder injury. Suazo has been back training with the team this week, and may make a return to the field on Wednesday night, albeit most likely coming off the bench.
While neither Monterrey nor Cruz Azul currently hold the top spot of their respective groups in the Primera standings, both clubs have a firm grasp on a Liguilla playoff spot. Monterrey are second in Group 1 behind Tigres, while Cruz Azul are tied with Morelia for second in Group 3, behind first place Pumas UNAM. The two sides do enter Wednesday’s semifinal on a bit of an upswing, as both are coming off wins in league play over the past weekend. Monterrey have had more time to rest following last Friday night's 1-0 road win over Necaxa. Cruz Azul have a much shorter turnaround following their huge win over Club America in Sunday night's Clasico Joven. While it was an incredible victory, rivalry games are emotionally taxing. Cruz Azul will have to avoid a letdown this week, and make sure they bring a renewed sense of urgency to Wednesday night’s match in Monterrey.

The second leg of the Concacaf Champions League semifinal between Cruz Azul and Monterrey moves to Estadio Azul on Wednesday night, a place where Cruz Azul are undefeated on the year. Monterrey won the first semifinal leg 2-1 at home, and judging by the recent league form of both teams this promises to be a worthy sequel. Monterrey has been one of the hottest teams in Mexico of late, and were winners of three straight league games before a road draw on Sunday afternoon at Toluca. Cruz Azul has been almost as good, going five league games without a loss, a streak that ended with Saturday night's surprising defeat on the road against Santos Laguna.
While neither team managed a win in league play this weekend, both teams were resting key players in anticipation of Wednesday nights match. Defensive midfielder Gerardo Torrado did not appear for Cruz Azul, while Humberto Suazo did not even make the trip to Toluca with his Rayados teammates.
In the first leg of the semifinal, Suazo did not start and played limited minutes as he was still recovering from an injury. Now back close to full strength, the talented Monterrey striker should feature prominently in this match. On the Cruz Azul side, la Maquina played the first leg without key attacking midfielder Christian "Chaco" Gimenez, who was serving a suspension for yellow card accumulation. Gimenez is the catalyst for his team’s attack, so expect to see a much more potent offense from Cruz Azul than we saw in the first leg.Interestingly enough, these two teams will also face each other again next Wednesday in league play, which will be their third meeting in less than a month. Struggling without the calming presence Gimenez, Cruz Azul were soundly outplayed by Monterrey in the previous leg. Even without Suazo in the starting lineup, Monterrey controlled possession and earned a 2-1 win behind goals from Neri Cardozo and Sergio Santana. Cruz Azul did manage to get on the board, though, with a goal from the unlikely source of defender Adrian Cortes. It proved to be a key score. Though trailing on the aggregate scoreboard, the away goal gives Cruz Azul a great shot to advance in Wednesday’s return leg at home.
