Ail the fuss afforded the clubs of Milan and Turin over the years has obscured the tact that Roma were one of the first two Italians clubs to win a European trophy. That was in 1961 when Roma beat Birmingham City over two legs to win the Fairs Cup. Roma's team included two popular Argentine for- wards in Pedro Manfredonia and Antonio Valentin Angelillo and an Italian goalkeeper in Fabio Cudicini.
Rom came closest to a European prize again in 1984. They were favourites to beat Liverpool in the Champions Cup Final since the venue was their own Stadio Olimpico. But the match ended 1-1 after extra time and Roma proved more nervy in the penalty shoot-out, which they lost 4-2. Brazilian midfielder Paulo Roberto Falcao, one of the outstanding personalities in Italian football in the 1980s, stayed aloof from the shoot-out and his relationship with Roma fans was never quite the same again. Roma were founded from a merger of four City clubs - Alba, Fortitudo, Roman and Pro Patria. They were members of the inaugural First Division in 1929-30, finishing sixth. Runners-up in 1931 and 1936 they rose to surprise championship winners in 1942 - inspired by the goals of Amadeo Amadei. The club were nearly bankrupted by relegation in 1951 and then again a decade later after miscalculating the high cost of signing German striker Jurgen Schutz and the Italo-Brazilian centre-forward Angelo Benedetto Sormani for a then world record £250,000.
