 The final score was emphatic, but it disguised the fact that for an hour Chelsea looked the better team at a wet Wembley and United were clinging to the ropes for much of the time. Gavin Peacock hit the bar in the first half and a tide of blue shirts threatened to swamp Schmeichel's area. But this United side was made of durable material and they picked up their game in the final half-hour to pull away over the closing stages, inspired to a great extent by the strut and swagger of their French talisman, Cantona.

 The breakthrough came after Eddie Newton fouled Denis Irwin in the box and Cantona nonchalantly sent Kharine the wrong way. Five minutes later Frank Sinclair fouled Kanchelskis close to goal and Cantona once again conned Kharine to score. Brian McClair said, 'Eric was such a great penalty-taker that we never doubted for a moment that he would score them both. We had been under some pressure earlier in the game, and it was a case of being patient and waiting for the game to turn our way, which it did. With United in charge and Chelsea in disarray Mark Hughes made it 3-0 a couple of minutes later, pouncing on an error by Sinclair before firing home. United had the luxury of a penalty miss as Cantona passed up on the chance of a hat-trick of spot-kick goals, but they still made it 4-0 in the late stages. Hughes sent Ince clear and the midfielder took the ball past Kharine before crossing for McClair to finish. McClair said, Paul Ince could have scored, but he was good enough to roll it to me and I miskicked the ball into an empty net.
