second leg
13th april 2011:
schalke v. internazionale milano
Schalke will be hoping for a steady performance against Inter to seal their passage to the UEFA Champions League semi-final. The surprise package of this year's tournament, Schalke hold a healthy three-goal cushion having won 5-2 in the San Siro in last week's first leg. The winners will face Manchester United but the Germans have been cautious in the build-up to the return leg at Veltins Arena, where they have won their last four European encounters. Schalke have never lost a European tie after winning the first leg away from home and they will be boosted by the nine goals they have scored in their last three home Champions League games. The omens are not particularly good for Inter, who have just one victory on their travels in the tournament this term and have one just five of their last 16 meetings away to German opposition.
The hosts are without the suspended Jefferson Farfan, who picked up a yellow card in the San Siro, while Christoph Metzelder is doubtful with a broken nose. Angelos Charisteas also misses out with a pulled thigh muscle and long-term absentees Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Christoph Moritz are both still recovering from knee injuries. No team has ever overturned a three-goal home first-leg defeat in the Champions League, but Leonardo's men have little to lose and will hope striker Samuel Eto'o can add to his eight-goal tournament tally.
Inter welcome back Lucio, who was sorely missed in the first leg through suspension, and he is likely to replace Christian Chivu as the Romanian is suspended following his dismissal in the San Siro. Leonardo has another option at centre-half though, as Walter Samuel is once again available after being named in the squad after a five-month injury lay-off.
