English Leagues the 80s: Liverpool Crystal Palace First Division 1989 1990

12 September 1989
Anfield,
Liverpool

Attendance 35,779
Referee Keren Barratt

Anfield has staged some extraordinary matches in its long and glittering history, but Tew could rival the "farewell parly" laid on for departing striker John Aldridge against Crystal Palace on 12 September. Amid amazing scenes as Liverpool achieved iheir record First Division win of 9-0, Aldridge left the substitutes' bench in the 69lh minute to collect his "present". The prolific Republic of Ireland striker, who with suine reluctance was due to complete his £1 million move to Spanish club Real Sociedad the next day, had dreamed of leaving Anfield with another goal lo remember.

Manager Kenny Dalglish, with a great sense of theatre, decided the moment for That dream to come true was when, with their lead al 5-0, Whelan had been fouled in the penalty area. He replaced Beardsiey with Aldridge, who jogged straight lo the penalty spot to a standing ovation, and promptly sent Suckling the wrong way with his kick. The Kop went wild. At the final whistle, Aldridge raced to the cheering Kop. pulled off his shirt and hoots and threw them to the Tans among whom he used to stand. His co-stars on the Liverpool scoresheet, the first time in Football League history that eight players had scored for one team in a single match, were Nicol (two), McMahon, Rush, Gillespie, Beard sley, Barnes and Hysen. It was an awesome performance by a side deprived of the title last season by dint of goals scored, and takes them to the lop of the table, above Millwall. The First Division tends to shudder when Liverpool edge in front in the dark days of December. For them to go to the front in the light nights of September is extremely ominous.
