Strong, quick and with an unerring eye for goal, Billy Liddell was Liverpool’s first superstar. He waited a long time for his début, having signed before the war as a teenager; he was unable to play in the first team until the conflict ended, but made up for lost time by winning the title in his first season and went on to appear more than 500 times for the club, staying at Anfield until the âge of 39. They were not the best of times for Liverpool, and the club spent the final seven seasons of his career in the Second Division, but Liddell rejected numerous suitors to stay with his first love.
