En Coupe de l'U.E.F.A., Moenchengladbach est toujours là, tour après tour. Sans Vogts mais avec son Danois
Alan Simonsen, il élimine successivement Sturm Graz (5-1, 1-2, deux buts de Simonsen), Benfica (0-0, 2-0 après prolongation), Slask Wroclaw (1-1, 4-2 en terre polonaise, et trois buts d'un Simonsen étincelant, dont deux aux 86e et 89e minutes sur une volée et un coup-franc direct), Manchester City (1-1,3-1) et Duisbourg (2-2,4-1, trois buts de Simonsen). C'est un petit miracle. Mais il y en a eu un autre : Berti Vogts, après huit mois de souffrances et d'efforts intensifs, a fait sa rentrée lors du match-retour contre Duisbourg, au poste de... libero. Aussitôt, il a remis de l'ordre dans une maison qui prenait l'eau par le toit et par les fondations. Moenchengladbach, avec Vogts, ne va plus perdre un match.
L'autre finaliste est l'Étoile Rouge de Belgrade qui s'est fait une spécialité, celle de la qualification dans les dix, voire les cinq dernières minutes. L'équipe yougoslave a éliminé Dynamo Berlin (2-5,4-1 dont deux buts de Savic et Borovnica aux 80e et 89e minutes) ; Gijon (1-0, Blagojevic 83e ; 1-1, Petrovic 82e) ; Arsenal (1-0,1-1) ; West Bromwich (1-0, Savic 86e ; 1-1, Sestic 87e) et Hertha Berlin (1-0, 2-1).
La finale de la Coupe U.E.F.A. se joue en deux matches aller-retour, pour assurer la recette de l'événement...

  Les Hollandais, à vrai dire, ne sont plus les monstres de la galaxie football, ceux qui faisaient trembler les mégalopoles en envoyant rouler vers elles une boule orange étincelante faite de onze métaux indestructibles. La génération prodigieuse est en train de s'éteindre à l'image de celui qui fut le plus grand de tous, Sa Majesté Johan Cruyff. Johan, justement, a des démangeaisons dans les chaussons. Il a passé son hiverau bord des canaux gelés, à tâter de la nostalgie et de la direction technique auprès d'Ajax. Pendant quatre mois, son téléphone n'a pas arrêté de sonner, perturbant les canards du domaine. «Voulez-vous jouer avec moâ?», sussuraient un club anglais (Arsenal), un club américain (Los Angeles), un club allemand (Cologne) et bien d'autres dans la foulée. Johan aime la liberté, son compte en banque suisse aussi. Son homme d'affaires lui ayant grignoté le pactole, il lui arrive de retourner à la mine pour pelleter quelques millions. Les temps sont durs pour les retraités, savez-vous !

 Many still consider this match be the finest performance by the finest vintage of Liverpool teams throughout the club’s history, Just before Liverpool clinched the First Division title in 1988, Liverpool hit five without reply and Brian Clough’s team knew they had been let off lightly. Just four days earlier Liverpool had beaten Forest 2-1 in the semi-final of the FA Cup at Hillsborough, and just a few weeks later Forest would finish third in the First Division. In front of almost 40,000 at Anfield, Aldridge scored twice while Gary Gillespie, Peter Beardsley and Ray Houghton also found the net…. The legendary Sir Tom Finney said of the game:  “It was the finest exhibition I’ve seen the whole time I’ve played and watched the game. You couldn’t see it bettered anywhere, not even in Brazil.” Ten days later Liverpool clinched their 17th Championship and their 9th in 14 seasons!

 Gianfranco Zola has returned to Chelsea for one last appearance and said a tearful goodbye to the fans who adored him for seven memorable seasons. Chelsea beat Real Zaragoza 3-0 in a friendly in London as new coach Jose Mourinho fine-tuned his plans for the new season, but still found time to give Zola, now with Cagliari, a run-out that was greeted by a huge standing ovation. "It was absolutely fantastic," Zola said. "It was emotional and an incredible response from the crowd."  The Italian forward was even given the captain's armband and convinced everyone he would still be able to terrorise English Premier League defences at the age of 38, just as he did in 1996 when he joined from Parma. Zola left Chelsea last year to return to his native Sardinia at around the same time as billionaire owner Roman Abramovich took control of the London club.

Queens Park Rangers failed to spark their new era into life despite an encouraging display as they were held to a goalless draw by Newcastle. Shaun Wright-Phillips was a menace on his debut as he headed over before having a chip cleared off the line. ay Bothroyd added to an open first half but was also denied under the bar by Danny Simpson and squandered a volley from seven yards out. Leon Best had Newcastle's best chance but Paddy Kenny saved to his right. The hosts faded after the break with Wright-Phillips going close again with a shot from distance after a fine run.
