Clough was angered by the bookings of Archie Gemmill and Roy McFarland, which ruled them out of the second leg, but the irony was that there was no evidence that the match in Italy was fixed. Glanville remembers Derby were well beaten on the night.
It was the return leg which Derby won 1-0 that Juventus did seem to attempt to influence but failed. An investigation by Glanville alleged that a Hungarian middle-man, Dezso Solti, who claimed to be acting for Juventus, approached the referee for the return leg, Portuguese Francisco Marques Lobo and offered a bribe of $5,000 and a new car.Solti reckoned without the integrity of Lobo, who immediately reported the matter to the authorities and subsequently told Glanville’s colleague, Keith Botsford, the full story. UEFA fudged the investigation but Solti was banned from football for a year. So Clough was wrong; but he was right to be paranoid.
