Les Whitecaps ont remporté 2-1 la finale du Championnat canadien de soccer, mercredi au BC Place de Vancouver, mettant la main sur la Coupe des Voyageurs en plus de se qualifier pour la Ligue des champions de la CONCACAF. Rapidement, les Whitecaps ont affiché leur supériorité avec plusieurs occasions dangereuses, mais toutes stoppées par le gardien du CF Montréal Jonathan Sirois. Dès la 5e minute, le portier montréalais effectuait une superbe parade sur une reprise de tête dans la surface de réparation, puis, deux minutes plus tard, Sirois gardait le score vierge d'un arrêt du bout des orteils sur un tir de réception qui filait droit au fond des filets. En première mi-temps, seul Ariel Lassiter, à la 44e minute, a menacé la cage vancouvéroise, son tir ne trompant toutefois pas la vigilance de Yohei Takaoka. De son côté, Sirois a fait face à 6 tirs cadrés dans les 45 premières minutes. Au total, Vancouver a dirigé 20 tirs (9 cadrés) vers sa cage au cours du match.

Au retour des vestiaires, Brian White a profité d'une gaffe de Sirois, qui a mal calculé sa sortie, laissant l'attaquant des Whitecaps l'occasion de marquer dans un filet abandonné (57e). Dix minutes plus tard, un tacle maladroit d'Ahmed Hamdi offrait un tir de pénalité à Vancouver, transformé avec sang-froid par Ryan Gauld (65e). Sunusi Ibrahim a assuré la réplique pour le CF Montréal (83e), mais c'était trop peu, trop tard. Avec cette victoire, les Whitecaps obtiennent leur billet pour la Ligue des champions de la CONCACAF, la saison prochaine. Il s'agissait du deuxième duel de l'année 2023 entre les deux équipes. Lors du premier affrontement, le 1er avril, Vancouver avait lessivé le CF Montréal 5-0, dans une rencontre du championnat de la MLS. A noter les 4000 kms parcourus par Montreal pour ce match suite à quelques 2000 kms trois jours plus tot....

For the first time in club history, the Whitecaps have captured back-to-back Voyageurs Cups. They knocked off CF Montreal 2-1 in a heart-stopping match at B.C. Place Wednesday night, a match that wasn’t decided until the final whistle. Brian White and Ryan Gauld had second-half goals to stake the home side to a 2-0 lead, but Sunusi Ibrahim clawed one back with seven minutes left in regulation, injecting life into an offensively unwilling side up to that point. The Caps are the first back-to-back winners since TFC the team they beat last year won three in a row from 2016-18. “First of all, I’m over the moon with happiness for winning the trophy again. It’s the first time for this club, so I’m very happy for everyone — all the players, all the people who work here, all the fans,” said coach Vanni Sartini. “I told them before the game I’m proud to work with them and share this journey with them. They inspire me.”

The Whitecaps outshot Montreal 20-9 (9-5 on target) but that total was far more lopsided in the early going. In the first half, Montreal’s Jonathan Sirois was the unquestioned hero. He made save after save, including a ridiculous kung fu kick save on a deflected Levante Johnson shot destined for the back of the net. “I’m also very happy with how we played for 80 minutes. I think, for 80 minutes, it was like, I don’t know … the headline today would be OK, ‘Messi’s coming but the Whitecaps play even better than Messi.’ For 80 minutes we were fantastic,” said Sartini. “Jonathan was the best player on the field by far. He was the only one who kept them in the game.”
