Cup Winners Cup 1983 1984 Manchester United Barcelona

Quarter Final,
Second Leg
21 March 1984
Old Trafford,
ManchesterAttendance: 58,350
Referee: Paolo Casarin

This now defunct competition was an old-fashioned two-legged knock-out. United, managed by Ron Atkinson, had qualified after winning the FA Cup after a final replay with Brighton and Hove Albion. Barcelona meanwhile, suffering a decade without a Liga title, had won the Copa Del Rey by beating Real Madrid in an unforgettable final. In that game, Diego Maradona had finally begun to look the part under the coaching of compatriot Cesar Luis Menotti.

March 1984 saw a meeting of two clubs both largely confined to cup successes during that era. The first leg took the tie to the Camp Nou where United put up a decent account of themselves but fell to an own-goal from young Scottish defender Graeme Hogg and a late blockbuster from Juan Carlos Rojo. Back at Old Trafford it seemed United had been handed mountain to climb. Yet on a night still remembered by fans of an evermore August vintage, the roof was very nearly taken off the Stretford End by a United performance matched by the ear-splitting baying from the stands. Bryan Robson, the subject of rumoured bids from Juventus and AC Milan, put Maradona in the shade with the type of lung-bursting and inspirational performance that gave him the monicker "Captain Marvel". First, Robbo threw himself headlong to bravely nod in a Ray Wilkins corner. Five minutes into the second half, Robson seized on a mistake from Javier Urruticoechea in the Barcelona goal to put the tie level. Robson then played a leading role in the clincher, playing a raking ball out wide to Arthur Albiston. Norman Whiteside headed back across the full-back's ball in and Frank Stapleton was the coolest man in the postcode as he slotted home. Ecstatic scenes on the terraces followed. There was still time for Bernd Schuster to curve a shot inches wide yet the night ended with Robson being carried from the pitch by hordes of fans all exhorting him to stay.

Friendly 1979 Italia Argentina

26 mai 1979
Olimpico Roma

Bundesliga 2010 2011 Werder Bremen Bayer Leverkusen

There is no dressing up the fact that Bremen are in trouble. Every week Thomas Schaaf and co must wonder when the club's fortunes will improve, only for things to get even worse. Last weekend's 4-0 defeat in the Nord derby to rivals Hamburg was a sickening experience for all concerned with the club, especially 250 fans in particular who sought answers from the team. Their is certainly a contrast in fortunes between the two sides heading into Sunday's crucial game between Bremen and Leverkusen. Leverkusen come into the game on the back of a 4-2 victory over Stuttgart and a 6-0 aggregate win in the Europa League over Metalist Kharkiv to send die Werkself into the last 16.

Primera Division 1992 1993 Real Madrid Seville

English Leagues the 60s: Chelsea Manchester United Division One 1968 1969

Match of The Day
Stamford Bridge,
London
Saturday 15 March 1969

The arrival of Dave Sexton as Chelsea's manager did nothing to dull the artistry of a side that painted on a broad canvas. In the next two years, they joined the privileged English masters in the European winners' academy.
The style and free spirit of their football was matched by that of the European champions Manchester United when a crowd of 60 000 saw
the teams walk out side by side in front of BBC cameras. Bobby Charlton was injured, but George Best was there, so was Denis Law, and Peter Osgood was back for Chelsea. The match was a thriller.
David Webb put Chelsea ahead in the first minute, Ian Hutchinson made it 2—0, then Steve James pulled one back for United.
In the second half, Bobby Tambling ran half the length of the pitch for Chelsea's third, and Law scored from a penalty.
But there was still time for humour in the game of the 60s.
The cameras caught referee George McCabe calming dowr an incensed Nobby Stiles by ruffling his hair.

Chelsea: Bonetti, Webb, McCreadie, Hollins, Dempsey. Harris, Boyle, Tambling, Hutchinson, Osgood, Houseman.
Scorers: Webb, Hutchinson, Tambling

Manchester United: Stepney, Fitzpatrick, A. Dunne, Crerand, James, Stiles, Morgan, Kidd, Sadler, Law, Best.
Scorers: James, Law (pen.)
