In the qualifying round, a 2-0 win over Lodz at Old Trafford, and a 0-0 draw in Poland, took English league runners-up Manchester United into the league. Their campaign began with a breathtaking game of football against Barcelona at Old Trafford. With Giggs and Scholes cutting swathes through the Spanish defence, the first goal came early on, Giggs soaring to connect with a Beckham cross in the 17th minute. Seven minutes later, Scholes stuck in a rebound from keeper Ruud Hesp. In the second half, Barcelona were irresistible. Rivaldo found Sonny Anderson, whose shot through the United defence eluded Schmeichel. In the 60th minute, Stam fouled Rivaldo in the area and Giovanni converted the penalty. 2-2.
