Although midfielder Frank Arnesen was absent from the line-up with a broken leg, Soren Lerby and Vanenburg were playing, as were forwards Kieft and Gillhaus, and the Benfica defence was a shaky one. Benfica winger and skipper Diamantino had torn his knee ligaments and was replaced by Han Sheu, whose job was to cut off the lines of communication between PSV's midfield and attack, and Magnusson and Aguas were to provide the firepower for the Portugese side.
