Campeonato Metropolitano 1981 Boca Juniors River Plate

Round 1.10
10 Avril 1981
Bombonera Buenos Aires

Team of The Century : Brazil 70

Mexico was a controversial choice to host the 1970 World Cup, and the distressed condition of some of the athletes in the Olympic Games held there two years earlier did nothing to help the Mexican cause. But in the event the finals not only provided thrilling competition and splendid entertainment, but there was little of the negativity and thuggery that blighted football in the sixties. Brazil, with the incomparable Pele, raised the game to newr heights and were universally popular winners. And England, who did not give up their hold on the trophy without a fight, took part in two unforgettable matches. A Record : 71 countries entered the 1970 World Cup, bill none had a more eventful passage to Mexico than El Salvador from the Concacaf zone. They played 10 games before qualifying, and one win over the neighbouring Honduras sparked off a two-week war between the mutual!) antagonistic countries. By contrast. Brazil qualified effortlessly from South America, winning all six matches and scoring 25 goals (Tostao nine, Pele six. Jairzinho four) to two. With England exempt as holders, Wesl Germany were the most impressive European qualifiers, dropping only one point. Gerd Muller scored 10 of their 20 goals, and they mauled Cyprus 12-0 in one game. The Germans conceded only three, all to Scotland, who were eliminated.

Pele’s debut for the Cosmos on the 10th of June 1975 was seen by millions of sports fans around the world, with a last minute panic from the grounds man that  his pitch didn’t look too green so he spray painted the pitch to give a grass  effect.

Playoffs Demie Finale
1 Septembre 1979

In 1979, the NASL landed a contract with ABC that called for 9 telecasts of league games, including the playoffs and Soccer Bowl. Below is a list of the games that ABC carried that year, with play-by-play announcer Jim McKay and color analyst Paul Gardner. The ratings were far below what ABC expected out of the “Sport of the 80’s,” and they bailed out of the contract after carrying several games in 1980.
The league comprised 24 teams. The Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the finals on August 27 to win the championship.

Deuxieme tour retour

As the 1968/69 season came around the question was, how could United match the euphoria they had experienced on that magical May evening at Wembley? The answer was that they couldn't. As soon as Busby had realised his ambition of winning the European Cup, much of the purpose seemed to fizzle out of the club. The heroes of Wembley were ageing together and new faces were needed to reinvigorate the club. Perhaps Busby, who had already built three champion sides, lacked the energy to create an unprecedented fourth great team. But whatever the reason, United lacked the vim of old as the season kicked off and by Christmas they had slid towards the bottom of the table. A miserable 3-0 defeat at Highbury on Boxing Day 1968 had an end-of-the-road feeling about it and in January 1969 the newly-knighted Sir Matt announced he would step down at the end of the season. A new job as general manager, working with a head coach, beckoned. Stepney said, '1 don't think he wanted to retire, but his health was poor. The injuries he received at Munich still affected him and but for his health I don't think he would have decided to move upstairs at all.'

By the time the two sides next met, in the 1972/73 European Cup semi-finals, Ajax were on the verge of achieving what the great Real Madrid side of the 1950s attained and that was to win three European Cups in succession. Ajax were playing a brand of football somewhat never seen before known as ‘Total Football’ – the origins traced back to Ajax coaches Vic Buckingham (who also discovered Johan Cruijff) and Jack Reynolds, both laid the foundations of this footballing philosophy and it was taken on further by legendary coach Rinus Michels, who played under Reynolds.
