Charity shield 1979 1980 Liverpool West Ham

9 August 1980
Wembley Stadium,
London

Attendance 90,000

That  was the stinging retort from Liverpool's England international goalkeeper Ray Clemence on TV after the League champions had opened the 1980-81 campaign with another Wembley triumph ... in the FA Charity Shield against FA Cup winners West Ham United. A few hiccups on their pre-season tour, with Liverpool suffering defeats at the hands of Anderlecht and Stuttgart, had set the tongues of the critics wagging. A few contractual problems with key players had also fanned the flames and questions were being asked: were a few cracks beginning to show in the reinforced concrete of England's greatest club? Were Liverpool on the decline? Or, as one cynic suggested, was the 'Empire beginning to crumble'? But the fierce pride of the champions was reflected in Ray Clemence's answer and Liverpool's Wembley victory which gave them their first trophy of the new season.

Premier League Season Review 2010 2011

Alex Ferguson believes the rise of Manchester City and the revival of Liverpool under Kenny Dalglish means that the top six teams will be competing for the title this season. "We used to talk about a top four, with ourselves, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool," says Ferguson. "You can't say that any more. Manchester City have definitely come into the frame. They have a buying power better than the rest of us. "Maybe having the run in the European Cup stretched Tottenham too much last season and they ended up being out of the top four. But you look at those teams and say any one of them could win the league!1
Although Manchester United won the title at a canter last time out, Ferguson has deemed a comprehensive rebuilding process necessary this summer While still seeking to add a creative midfielder, with Internazionale's Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder the prime target, they had already spent in excess of 500 million on new players. Chelsea will again be expected to be strong challengers, but new manager Andre Villas-Boas has yet to make his mark in the transfer market.

World Cup 2011 U20 Brasil Portugal

Final
21 August 2011
Estadio Nemesio Camacho
"El Campín",
Bogotá, D.C.
Referee M. Geiger
Attendance:  36058

Brazil was the clear favorite for the match between former colony and colonizer, but it was an even contest from start to finish, with only the brilliance of Oscar making the difference. “This really makes us happy, because now we have matched the record of the senior team,” Brazil coach Ney Franco said, referring to the five World Cups Brazil’s top side has won. Portugal coach Ilidio Vale said the result was “not completely just” but acknowledged Brazil’s “high quality team.” “We were close to the dream, but we could not quite win it,” Ilidio said. Asked about Ilidio’s claim of injustice, Franco replied: “I disagree with what he (Ilidio) said. “The trophy is in our lockerroom.” Oscar made the difference with his three goals — his first three of the 3 1/2-week tournament — in a performance that is sure to bring the big European clubs knocking on the door of the 19-year-old Internacional playmaker.

Premier League 2011 2012 The Merseyside Derby Everton Liverpool

European Cup 1979 1980 Nottingham Forest Hamburg SV

Final 28 May 1980
Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid
Attendance: 50,000
