As the end of 1970 approached, Liverpool's chief problems were in attack. Roger Hunt, who had scored 17 goals in European competition for the Reds, had left a year before to go to Bolton Wanderers, and his intended replacement, the injury-plagued Tony Hateley, had departed to Coventry City. So, Shankly plunged into the transfer market, signing the powerful Cardiff City striker John Toshack for £110.000. By the time Liverpool travelled to Scotland, Toshack had already hit the net twice and he would strike the only goal of the game in Edinburgh on his European debut. Hibernian's manager, Willie McFarlane, had been dismissed 24 hours before the big all-British clash. On the morning of the game, Hibernian appointed Dave Ewing as McFarlane's replacement. Easter Road Stadium was packed with more than 30,000 spectators to see this European spectacular. With a little more luck, perhaps the 'Hibees' might well have won, but things started to go against them from the start. In the fourth minute, the East German referee, Rudi Glockner, dismissed their penalty appeal, and it seemed fated not to be their night. Midway through the second half, Hibs also had a goal disallowed. This blow was compounded 15 minutes from time, when Liverpool scored. Liverpool's goal was the result of neat work down the flanks by Steve Heighway, whose precise cross was nodded home by John Toshack. In midfield, little Brian Hall was also proving an inspired signing, giving an excellent performance. Hibernian, who had previously defeated Barcelona, Valencia, FC Porto, Napoli, Lokomotiv Leipzig and SV Hamburg at their Easter Road Stadium, had given Liverpool a run for their money. Bill Shankly was more than happy to escape with a win.
Hibernian: Baines, Brownlie, Schaedler, Blackley, Black, Stanton, Davidson (McBride), McEwan, Stevenson, Blair, Duncan.
Liverpool: Clemence, Lawer, Lindsay (Ross), Smith, Lloyd, Hughes, Hall, McLaughin, Heighway, Toshack, Thompson.
Scorer: Toshack (75).
