Fantastic fightbacks, goals galore and memorable individual displays headlined an action-packed day in the second round qualifying. South Shields staged a remarkable escape mission to progress to third round qualifying. Elsewhere in the north-east, Wallsend BC brought Wigginton Grasshoppers' first campaign to an end by winning 5-0 while Stockton Town edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3 against Park View who were 17-0 victors in the previous round. Brunsmeer Athletic defeated Rotherham United 6-4 and Grimsby Town hosted a barnburner as visitors Leeds Modernians came out on top 6-5. Seventh-tier Brookside Athletic earned a superb 4-1 win at a Stamford side two divisions above them while Gateshead Leam Rangers also progressed, beating sixth-tier Hartlepool United 5-0 away from home. Ramsey & Mitley and Leyton Orient also sprung surprises with 5-1 away wins at sides from higher divisions, Brantham Athletic and Dussindale & Hellesdon respectively. Tiverton Town kept their dreams alive with a penalty shootout victory over Bishops Lydeard, who play two tiers higher, following a goalless draw. Mancunian Unity, who enjoyed a run to the third round proper last season, kept their progress going this time around with a 4-0 win over Curzon Ashton.
Toby FC’s historic first-ever home Adobe Women’s FA Cup tie ended in defeat as Needham Market ran out 3-1 winners thanks to Mia Etheridge-Golding’s opener and Annie Posnett’s double. Kayla Potter scored five times as Wycombe Wanderers won 10-1 at Wallingford & Crowmarsh, while there were also big wins for Athletico London, 12-1 at Southend, and Shrewsbury Town, who scored eight without reply at Albrighton. FC St Helens did likewise at home to Hyde while new Bolton Wanderers signing Abbie Brown scored twice as they beat Chester 5-0. Last season’s Mitre Golden Ball winner – Preston North End’s Madison Hadley – found the net again but will be unable to add to her tally in the later rounds after her side were knocked out on penalties at Poulton Victoria following a 2-2 draw. The weather sadly intervened to postpone several ties, including the local derbies at Carlisle United, who were due to host Penrith, and Manchester Laces, where FC United of Manchester were the scheduled visitors.
Stoke City's journey was cut short after a couragous effort against league leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers ended in a 2-0 defeat. The second-round bout was decided by two second half goals from the Old Gold's Beth Merrick and Rachael Quigley. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 74th minute when the Old Gold caught City on the counter attack and Merrick fired her effort into the roof of the net. The Potters had the chance to equalise when Lucia Molinari's teasing ball to the back post evaded both Delphi Cole and Stamps. As time wound down, Harriet Grimshaw's parried save fell to the feet of Quigley who found the back of the net from a tight angle.
