Franco Baresi Il Capitano

Baresi led the Milan team and its defence for the best part of a decade; a period during which Milan's defence was considered by many observers to be one of the best back fours in the history of football, consisting of Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti. He is also one of the few players who spent his entire career at one club, AC Milan, for whom he played 719 games, scoring 33 goals. He retired from playing in 1997 aged 37. With Milan, Baresi won six scudetti (Serie A league titles) and three European Cups  though he did not take part in the last win, his club's 1994 Champions League victory, through suspension. He mentored defensive partner Paolo Maldini in his later years, whose career has followed a similar path. His number 6 shirt was retired by the club, a rarity for Italian football.

Coupe des Clubs Champions 1966 1967 Ajax Amsterdam Liverpool

Deuxieme tour aller
Olympic Stadium Amsterdam

7 decembre1966

It was Liverpool's 13th game in Europe, and it was to be an unlucky one. Ajax had not played in Europeen competition since 1961, and they had performed without much success in theirthree seasons in Europe. Their recent record, though, suggested that they were a team to watch.  They were unbeaten  in the  Dutch league, and had scored 57 goals in 14 games. Although it would be a few more seasons before they fully matured, they gave more than a hint, against Liverpool, of what was to corne. What nobody could possibly hâve reckoned with was the fog. Added to that was a 19-year-old prodigy called Johan Cruyff. The fog was the first obstacle. It descended thick and swirling on Amsterdam, and totally engulfed the Olympic Stadium. While inspecting the pitch, the Italien referee, Antonio Sbardella, announced that if he could see from one goal to the other then the game would go ahead. On that basis, the match should hâve been called off, but the UEFA officiai overruled the referee, announcing that if it was possible to see from the half-way line to the goal, then the game would take place. Unfortunately for Liverpool, the UEFA rule stood, even though the game kicked off with few of the 64,000 crowd able to see much of the play. Even the journalists sitting in the stand confessed that they actually viewed little of the action.

Liga 2010 2011 Club Deportivo La Coruña Sevilla

The lead-up to Christmas brought hope for Deportivo La Coruna that they might miss the worst of the relegation storm, but a poor run of results has been quick to suck them back into problems. Miguel Angel Lotina’s side may be stationed 13th in the table, but they are only four points clear of the bottom three, and the coach will want them to press on the accelerator immediately.Eleven points behind fourth-placed Valencia, the prospects of Sevilla reaching next season’s Champions League would appear to be slim. Having lost nine times already this season, los Nervionenses are well off their expected pace and only a remarkable resurgence in the closing months of the campaign will see them hit the targets they set for themselves at the campaign’s outset.

Deportivo, founded in 1906, had never won a Liga title when in 1994 a dramatic penalty miss of Miroslav Djukic only added another traumatic event to the history of the club. But six years after that history was rewritten when Javier Irureta led the club in his second season in charge to their first ever Liga title. But all season long the fear had been there of another dramatic failure. In August 1999 there were no Pandiani, Tristán, Valerán or Luque at the club and back then Deportivo had never played a match in the Champions League. The years before had been characterized by irregular performances as the club just avoided relegation in 1998 and finished sixth after the season 1998/1999 had finished.
