In a season in which Newcastle United went head to head with Manchester United for the Premier League crown, the timing could not have been better for Kevin Keegan s team to turn on the style and deliver a five goal thrashing to their league rivals in what is remembered as an unforgettable classic in St James Park history. Defending intelligently and attacking stylishly, Newcastle United lived up to their billing as The Entertainers that afternoon as the likes of David Ginola, Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer combined to send the Magpies back to the top of the table.
The first goal of the afternoon came as Shearer knocked the ball on for centre-half Darren Peacock whose downward header found its way through the defence to cross the line just. If the visitors had any doubts over the first goal, there was no disputing the second as Ginola, in inspirational form that day, connected with the ball to net one of the strikes of the season. The third followed after the break as Shearer battled past the defence, sending in a cross to find the head of Ferdinand to put another past Peter Schmeichel. Shearer was again amid the action for the fourth goal of the afternoon, after a Beardsley shot was blocked, only to land at the feet of the Newcastle number 9 and, in a display of pure brilliance, the final goal came in thrilling fashion. Philippe Albert glided past the visitors and finished the move with a sublime left-footed chip over the Danish goalkeeper from 25 yards to send the Toon Army into raptures and knock their opponents off the top spot in the league
