It’s now seven years since South Africa’s most popular club tasted success, when they won the league title at the end of the 2014/15 season Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping for a revival of fortunes in the 2022/23 season after undergoing significant changes over the past few months. Two seasons ago Chiefs showed a glimpse of what they can do by reaching the Caf Champions League final. But since then they’ve changed coaches twice and have made significant alterations to the squad. 

While rivals Orlando Pirates preferred to hire a European coach, Chiefs have placed their faith in long-time club servant and former player Arthur Zwane. It's going to be interesting to see which approach works best. Off the field, the club has also been working hard to reestablish the trust and support of their fans and there is hope of a revival. Chiefs finished on the same number of points as third-placed Royal AM, but ended fifth, behind Stellenbosch FC as well, due to goal difference. That meant qualification for the MTN8, but failure to qualify for African competitions. It was also a season that marked the dismissal of head coach Stuart Baxter, who was replaced by interim coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard, who were given the role on a full-time basis at the end of the season. Amakhosi's transfer activity has been measured and there seems to be some promise in their new signings. However, it's not entirely convincing as to how much impact the new men will make and if they prove valuable acquisitions; time will tell.

New arrivals include: George Matlou, Kamohelo Mahlatsi and Dillon Solomons (all Swallows), Yusuf Maart (Sekhukhune United), Ashley du Preez and Zitha Kwinika (both Stellenbosch) and Siyethemba Sithebe (AmaZulu). Perhaps equally important is that the Glamour Boys were able to trim the squad of aging veterans and players who had probably already given the best years of their careers to the club. The sweeping of a new broom was important. The departures include: Lazarous Kambole, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Samir Nurkovic, Dumisani Zuma, Kearyn Baccus, Daniel Cardoso, Teddy Akumu, Bernard Parker, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Leonardo Castro, Daniel Akpeyi and Lebogang Manyama. Since Kaizer Motaung Jr has become more vocal and influential as the club's Sporting Director, one gets the sense that a lot of soul searching has been done behind the scenes and that a lot is being done to try improve on the ways things have gone for Amakhosi over the past seven trophyless seasons. It feels now like the club genuinely have their supporters' interest at heart. A new start under a bright young coach eager to prove himself, with some decent new signings, are reasons for optimism.
