Estudiantes de La Plata went into the second leg of the 2008 Copa Sudamericana final trailing 1-0 on aggregate, thanks to a Nilmar goal in the first leg in La Plata last Wednesday. On Wednesday night, though, they kept hosts Internacional out in Porto Alegre and, with a second half goal from Agustín Alayes, got it back to 1-1. They might have won it late on, but in extra time Nilmar pounced again, and the title went to the Brazilians.
In the first half both sides started at a quick pace but gradually Inter began to impose themselves more, Alex and Andrés D’Alessandro combining well in possession, as they had done in the first leg, but found themselves unable to exert real pressure on Estudiantes’ backline. Going with a 3-5-2 in an attempt to control the midfield, Estudiantes kept the hosts by and large at bay in spite of their possession, and at half time were still level on the night, going in at the break with a parity they deserved. In the second half, the awaited goal arrived. Andrezinho had flashed a shot just wide early on after the break, but Estudiantes, although seeming to lack ideas going forward, looked a little more comfortable and the goal arrived – as it had to – from a set piece. Nicolás Benítez sent a free kick over which Alayes volleyed past Lauro in the hosts’ goal, and at 1-0 on the night, the final was all square. After that, the visitors attacks seemed to snowball. Inter were pushed back to play on the break, and Estudiantes might have had a winner when, late on, Marcos Angeleri raced forward from right back and sent a shot whizzing just past the angle of post and crossbar from outside the box.
Tied at 1-1 on aggregate, the final went into extra time. Juan Sebastián Verón had to be replaced due to injury and with him went much of Estudiantes’ thinking in midfield. The first half of extra time saw goalmouth scrambles at both ends, but no goals. Midway through the second period of 15 minutes, a D’Alessandro corner caused trouble for Mariano Andújar in the Estudiantes goal, and Nilmar was on hand to poke home and make it 1-1 on the night, 2-1 on aggregate. Internacional, winners of the Copa Libertadores in 2006, are the champions of the Copa Sudamericana 2008.
