The 1991 92 campaign of Queen's Park Rangers had delivered highlights including a rollicking 4-1 win at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day, a televised encounter that seems so modern with hindsight that one struggles to believe it occurred in the old Football League. All told, it was a positive first season under new manager Gerry Francis. Many had this down as an easy win for United, but the Hoops extended their unbeaten run and handed Alex Ferguson a late and unwanted birthday present.

Andy Sinton and Dennis Bailey scored within the space of five minutes before Bailey doubled his tally in the second-half. Brian McClair pulled one back for United late on but it didn't matter, as Bailey completed his hat-trick and took the three points back to Loftus Road.
