Rovers started the 1991-92 season with Don Mackay at the helm, but the appointment of Kenny Dalglish as manager in mid-October signalled Owner Jack Walker’s intent for his beloved Blackburn. An incredible run of results from early November through to mid-February, which saw Rovers record 11 wins and three draws from 15 games, propelled Dalglish’s troops towards the top of the table. Despite a late stutter, which included six successive defeats, Rovers secured a play-off place on the final day of the campaign courtesy of David Speedie’s hat-trick in a 3-1 win away to Plymouth Argyle. Speedie was at it again in the play-offs, scoring twice in the first leg 4-2 victory over Derby County, as Rovers came from two goals down to run out 5-4 winners on aggregate and book their place in the showpiece final against Leicester City. In front of almost 70,000 fans on a scorching hot day at Wembley on May 25th 1992, Mike Newell’s penalty midway through the first half proved to be the difference between the two teams, as Rovers returned to the top flight for the first time in 26 years, becoming a founder member of the inaugural Premiership in the process.
